Good Reasons to Become a Vegan

The slaughter of farmed animals causes terrible suffering. The animals are surrounded by the smell of death and will shriek and thrash around in terror

Animals being farmed for their meat, eggs, milk and skins are effectively slaves, with no rights as individuals. Animals naturally make friends with each other and feel a range of emotions, such as happiness, loneliness, fear and excitement. On modern factory farms they are treated like emotionless meat machines

Farmed animals consume vast quantities of water, beans and grains whilst the worlds poorest people starve.

  • Grain-fed beef is several times more water-consumptive than most other foods: producing just 0.2 kilograms (8 ounces) of beef can use 25,000 liters of water.
In contrast, producing enough flour in developing countries to make a loaf Jf bread

A quarter of the earths surface is wasted as pasture for livestock, whilst wildlife habitats, including rainforests, keep on shrinking.

95% of food poisoning is caused by eating animal products. All raw meat should be assumed to contain bugs, such as salmonella or E.col i.

Many painfull illnesses such a heart disease, arthritis and some types of cancer are caused, or made worse, by a meat based diet. Vegetarians have been shown to be slimmer, have a lower risk of heart disease and live longer than the general population.

Eating meat means that you digest all the nasty substances in the bodies of intensively farmed animals such as antibiotics, hormones and even BSE. Meat eaters are also swallowing lots of genetically modified foods without realising it, because over half of the genetically modified crops grown around the world are made into animal feed.

You will feel better and more lively if you take corpses out of your diet. It is one of the best things you can do for yourself, the animals and the environment.

Farmed animals generate huge amounts of polluting slurry and cattle and sheep also fart and burp out vast quantities of methane which is a very damaging greenhouse gas. Livestock farming also wastes billions of gallons of water and is one of the worlds biggest sources of water pollution. As if this wasn't bad enough, animal farming also takes up vast amounts of land

  • Britain's fish farms produce more sewage than 9 million people.
  • If animal farming were to end, huge areas of land would be freed up for nature reserves, recreation and other uses.
  • Rainforests are being cleared at an alarming rate in order to create more space for rearing beef cattle
